Studying the Healing Arts at BACWTT

BACWTT has provided opportunities to study the healing arts since 2017. There is a great need in the world today for artistic work that allows people to become creative, to express themselves, to use their body and senses, and to get their hands on real materials. Life in the 21st century—with its speed, enervating energy, and anxiety—requires that we work intentionally to find balance and harmony. Our way of working artistically is aimed at recovering the loss of real hand work as well as real sensory and three-dimensional experiences, which have been weakened by the use of screen technology. Through artistic work, we may reclaim and re-enliven our visual, haptic, and spatial processes for ourselves and discover how to share its healing potential with others.

For some students, our programs are an opportunity to deepen the artistic aspects of Waldorf education and to bring this to the children they teach. For other students already involved in healing vocations, this is an opportunity to add artistic practices to their work with clients and patients.

The one-year, online Healing Power of Art program provides an introduction to our artistic approach while allowing students to participate from wherever they are in the world. We provide a balanced range of activities—watercolor painting, pastel and charcoal drawing, form drawing, and sculpting with sand and clay. Students encounter our way of working artistically and learn how various activities can be therapeutically effective. By directly experiencing the healing impact of the artistic work, students can immediately bring the exercises into their classrooms or in their work with others.

The one-year, online Healing Power of Art II program builds upon the first year and goes deeper into the core, artistic principles of Anthroposophy-inspired healing arts. In the Light, Color, and Darkness work we go deeper to develop our understanding and feeling for these artistic realms. In sculptural work, we explore developmental metamorphic processes, the seven planetary influences, and polarities are the main themes.

As students progress, developing both technical skills and the senses are important in becoming more proficient and more attuned to receive impressions that will guide their work with others.

The three-year, hybrid Healing Through Art program guides students deeply into true artistic processes where they are immersed in the materials, impressions, and inner experiences. Working effectively as an artistic therapist requires one to fully live in the artistic worlds of color, light, darkness, and form. Classes with Anthroposophical doctors, nurses, and counselors lead to insights into the human being and healing practices as well as professional practices.

Both The Healing Power of Art and The Healing Power of Art II may be taken in preparation for the Healing Through Art program.
